Roman-Catholic Church of St. Nicolas (Kyiv, Ukraine)

The St. Nicholas Roman Catholic Cathedral was constructed from 1899–1909 and was built in a Gothic type construction, by Kiev architects V. Gorodetsky and E. Salya. Historically, it belonged to the Latin rite Catholic community.

A competition was held in 1898 for the designs for a Roman Catholic Cathedral in Kiev, which was won by architect S.Volovskiy. His entry into the competition included a Gothic type construction with two 62 meter towers. The final revision and management of the project was assigned to the Kievan architect Vladislav Gorodetsky, and Emilio Sala added sculptural decoration in artificial stone to the construction. To increase the stability of the construction on the uneven Kiev ground, it was ensured by bore-and-stuffed piles, a newly introduced invention of A. Straus. The construction work was carried out by exclusively from voluntary donations, and lasted for ten years (1899-1909).

Refectory Church of Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra (Kyiv, Ukraine)

The Refectory Church is a refectory and an adjoining church of Saint Anthony and Theodosius of the medieval cave monastery of Kiev Pechersk Lavra in Kiev. In the refectory, the Lavra monks had their meals. The churches adjoining the refectory were constructed in 1893-1895 at a time when more than a thousand monks were living within the monastery.

The sturdy dome of the church incorporates some aspects of ancient Byzantium. The interior decoration of the building was directed by the architect A. Schusev. The marble icons are in the Neo-Russian style. The paintings in both the refectory and the church, painted in the beginning of the 20th century by Ivan Yizhakevych, G. Popov, among many others, contain a Modernist influence. St. Sofia Cathedral (Ukraine, Kyiv)

St. Sofia Cathedral is the world famous historical and architectural monument of the first half of the 11th century. The name of the cathedral comes from Greek word "sofia", which means "wisdom". Built in the times of Yaroslav Mudry, the cathedral served as a social, political and cultural center of Kievan Rus, where foreign ambassadors were received, chronicles were recorded and the first Russian library, founded by Yaroslav Mudry himself, functioned. Yaroslav Mudry's ruling was the time when art, education and culture prospered. As of Kiev, it became one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and Asia. Construction of Sofia cathedral played an important role in Kiev's look formation.

The cathedral was founded in 1037. Originally it had 5 naves and was surrounded with 2 circled galleries. During the centuries the architectural look of the cathedral had been changing. The cathedral was badly damaged during the Tatar yoke and then restored; it was burned many times and was reconstructed again....
